If you see something, say something

Dear Byron-Bergen students and families,

I am saddened by the tragic event at Oxford High School in Michigan on November 30th. It reminds me that, even in our small community, we are not insulated from these acts of violence. I want to take a moment to remind everyone that we can help protect each other.

While it does no good to point fingers, we can examine the actions taken by Oxford High School officials and discuss how we might react in a similar situation. Byron-Bergen is doing just that. I continue to work with the faculty and staff on the best practices in lock down or active shooter scenarios so that we can best protect our students.

Additionally, I want to remind everyone in our community to remember that if you see something, say something. These acts of violence often include warning signs. Early warnings are integral to avoiding escalated situations. Contacting the District or local law enforcement if you hear or see something that makes you believe someone might be a danger to themselves or our community can help us protect each other.

Lastly, our counselors are available for students who need support or just want to talk. Byron-Bergen is an amazing community and we can stay safer by working together.

Sincerely,
Pat McGee
Byron-Bergen Central School District Superintendent
