Mock Trial Quarterfinals
Mock Trial Team

On Monday, March 20th, the Byron-Bergen CSD Mock Trial team traveled to the Wyoming County Courthouse in Warsaw, NY to compete in the New York State Mock Trial Quarterfinals competition.  This program is a joint venture of The New York Bar Foundation, the New York State Bar Association, and the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program.  Byron-Bergen CSD had advanced to this competition after posting victories over Pembroke CSD and the Batavia City School District.

This year’s court case involved a workplace accident where the plaintiff (a hired construction worker) claimed that the homeowner failed to keep the premises in a condition safe for the workers. There was an unsafe ladder near a live power source and on a slippery floor that resulted in an injury to the plaintiff.  The defendant, however, claimed that the worker was contributorily negligent for being drunk or hungover at the worksite and failing to use the equipment correctly.

The team was led by lawyers Matthew Tanner, Dayi Caballero, Adam Piper and witnesses Libby Piper, Jade Wolff, Lydia Zaffrann on the Plaintiff side.  On the Defendant side, the team was led by lawyers Gianna Clark, Jackson Lundfelt, Carlee Barons and witnesses Martin McConnell and Caris Carlson.  Despite a strong effort on the Plaintiff’s side, the team eventually lost to Attica CSD.  The Byron-Bergen CSD Mock Trial team is co-led by advisors Evelyn Hunt and Andrew McNeil.
