Greetings,
Welcome back to another great year at Byron-Bergen Central
School District! This year we are expanding our important work to include a
multi-year social emotional learning (SEL) initiative.
With the help of Whole Child
Connection, a University of Rochester affiliate, we will improve social
and emotional competencies in our student body. Our goal is to make sure we are
teaching our students to do more than just get good grades. We are preparing
them for life outside of school and that includes the ability to manage their emotions,
set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and
maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
SEL has proven to have many positive outcomes including greater
success later in life, lower rates of risky behavior, and higher academic
achievement. Additionally, engaging in SEL has proven to increase the job
satisfaction of those who work with children. This initiative has the potential to make our
District an even better place to learn and work and I look forward to seeing
how SEL is making a positive impact on our students.
It’s going to be a great year.
Best regards,
Mickey Edwards
