Social Emotional Learning Coordinator Position

Byron-Bergen Central School District is doubling down on their commitment to social emotional learning (SEL) with the creation of a new position dedicated to implementing the District’s SEL goals. SEL is defined as the process through which children and adults gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to: 
  • understand and manage emotions, 
  • set and achieve positive goals, 
  • feel and show empathy for others, 
  • establish and maintain positive relationships, 
  • and make responsible decisions. 
Byron-Bergen launched the SEL initiative in 2019. It began in partnership with SEL Consultant Chris Merle from MK Consulting and Training and has expanded to include programs for all grade levels and teacher trainings. The SEL Coordinator position is made possible with American Rescue Plan Relief funds.
 
“The District has been implementing the SEL initiative through guest speakers, in-house presentations, and workshops,” said Byron-Bergen Superintendent Pat McGee. “The reason I’m so excited about this new position is that it gives a much-needed continuity to the program. Having a dedicated staff member to help our students and our District meet our SEL goals is crucial.” 
 
At the September 9th Board of Education meeting, Megan Wahl was confirmed as the first SEL Coordinator for the District. Wahl has been with the District since 2007, most recently teaching sixth grade.
 
“I am most excited to use my experiences from the classroom and be able to work with all students and staff across both buildings,” said Wahl. “I feel SEL is extremely important in helping students navigate both their personal and academic responsibilities in order to have the greatest successes! I think it is wonderful that Byron-Bergen is working so hard to put SEL at the forefront of this school year and can't wait to see how this can positively impact students for years to come.” 
 
Wahl earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Edinboro University in Erie, PA. Her master’s studies focused on Early Childhood Development. She has taught 3rd and 6th grades and worked on class trips, student council, and character education for the District.
