Masking update

Dear Byron-Bergen Families:

On Sunday, February 27, Governor Hochul announced that the mandate requiring masks in school buildings within regions of the state with low or medium COVID-19 infection rates will be lifted on Wednesday, March 2. The Governor cited strong COVID-19 vaccination rates, falling positivity rates, declining hospitalization rates, and new guidance from the CDC as criteria for this decision.

The mask mandate for Byron-Bergen schools and schools across the state remains in effect on Monday, February 28 and Tuesday, March 1. On Wednesday, March 2, all grade levels at our schools will become mask optional. Masks will remain optional unless infection rates increase to a higher level that requires we return to masking or a new requirement is enacted by New York State.

We understand that this news will bring relief to some and cause apprehension for others. Our goal during this transition is to create safe spaces for all students and staff members. Thank you in advance for being understanding of the feelings and concerns of others and their personal choice about masking. Whatever choice a student and family makes, our staff will continue to create a welcoming and affirming environment for all.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions.

Best wishes,

Pat McGee
Byron-Bergen Central School District Superintendent
