Junior High National Geographic GeoBee

Byron-Bergen Junior High students participated in the National Geographic Society's Geography Bee on Tuesday, January 8th, 2019.  Based on a written test taken in December, twenty-four of our students were asked to participate in our annual school level Bee.  All participants answered questions in the preliminary rounds, which were used to determine who would compete in the finals.

Congratulations to all the participants:  7th graders included Braedyn Chambry, Grayson Erion, Hanna Loewke, Naomi Mathias, Stephanie Onderdonk, Brendan Pimm, Carter Prinzi, Lukas Volkmar, Lydia Zaffran, and Megan Zwerka.  8th graders included Jack Benstead, Dayanara Caballero, Cameron Carlson, Caris Carlson, Evan Cuba, Kendan Dressler, Gianni Ferrara, Frank Hersom, Libby Piper, Abigail Raccuia, Andrew Rimmerman, Alexandria Schuck, Matthew Tanner, and Nicholas Zwerka.

Students who qualified for the Final Round were Jack Benstead, Grayson Erion, Libby Piper, Andrew Rimmerman, and Lukas Volkmar.

The top two contestants Jack Benstead and Libby Piper went on to compete in the Championship Round.  After several questions, Libby was declared the Geography Bee champion. She was given a medal from the National Geographic Society and awarded a $35 Amazon gift card.  As the runner-up, Jack received a $15 Amazon gift card.

Libby will now complete a written test, which will be submitted to the National Geographic Society.  If her score is among the highest from New York State, she will be asked to participate in the state level bee.  The winner in each state competes in the National Geography Bee in Washington, D.C.
