Varsity Club’s Holiday Food Drive sets new record

Members of the winter season sports teams pulled together to collect more than 850 non-perishable food donations—a record amount for the Varsity Club’s food drive.

Now in its fifth year, the 2017 Holiday Food Drive was organized by Varsity Club officers Leah Thompson, president; MaKenzie Muoio, vice-president; Morgan Fuller, secretary and Lucas Stucchio, treasurer. The positive energy and persuasion necessary for gathering the hundreds of items was provided by the girls and boys basketball and swim teams, and the cheerleading team. Team members pooled their competitive spirit to make the challenge more fun: it became a contest, won by the Cheer Team who collected over 300 items.

The food drive is part of the district’s larger Holiday Community Service project that is supported by community members and businesses, administrators, students, teachers and staff from all our buildings. Donations include toys, food and clothing items, plus hundreds of dollars in donations to help purchase gifts. Food baskets and gifts are delivered families in need by Hesperus Lodge No. 837 Free & Accepted Masons and many student volunteers.

Varsity team members from all three seasons of sport at Byron-Bergen contribute their efforts to district neighbors throughout the school year, with community service projects like the annual Lift-a-thon, the Retro Apparel Sale, and the spring Blood Drive.
