Monday Message from Superintendent Edwards - June 1, 2020

Dear Byron-Bergen students and parents,

Today, instead of recapping the plans and events going on in our District, I would like to take a moment to meditate on the idea of peace. I’m sure many of you are aware of the ongoing protests and social unrest in our country. Although we are physically separated, I hope that we can still offer each other comfort, support, and kindness during this difficult time.

First, I would like to send my deepest sympathy to my fellow citizens struggling to process their trauma and grief. Secondly, I would like to address our school community directly. At times like these, it helps me to remember the saying, “Life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react to it.” We are, each of us, in charge of our actions and I encourage our school community to choose to be ambassadors for peace.

Peace does not mean acceptance, but choosing how you respond will make a big difference in working together toward meaningful change or fueling the divide. Please, choose to be ambassadors for peace. Listen thoughtfully. Respond with kindness. Act with empathy.

It is understandable, even expected, that many of our students may need additional support during this time. Our staff and counselors are available. Reach out to your teachers or school office and they will put you in touch with counselors and resources that can help. You are not alone.

Lastly, I want to state, in no uncertain terms, that each member of this community is valuable. Each student is cherished. Each District staff member, farmer, healthcare worker, first responder, home-maker, parent, grandparent, and citizen is essential. We are in this together.

As always, stay safe and take care of each other.

Best wishes,

Mickey Edwards
Byron-Bergen Central School District Superintendent
