John Tomidy announces retirement

John Tomidy is retiring after thirty-nine years of teaching secondary English, thirty-five of which have been at Byron-Bergen. He said that he's ready for retirement but it feels strange for two reasons:1)  the conditions caused by the pandemic pause, and 2) the fact that he's been going to school (in one way or another) for the last fifty-five years.

He is grateful to retired superintendent Bill Hayes and former principal Dr. Joseph Scanlon for hiring him at Byron-Bergen in 1983, thus commencing a career that he has found "extremely rewarding."

Mr. Tomidy stated, "I have had the privilege of working with some quality people in the Byron-Bergen learning community: students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and board of education members." He added, "I hope that throughout it all, I was able to make my students think and my colleagues laugh." In retirement, he is looking forward to reading, traveling with his wife Karen, spending more time with his (growing) family, and being exclusively on "Tomidy Time".

He used a middle English quote from Geoffrey Chaucer's Prologue to The Canterbury Tales to sum up his career:

"And gladly wolde he lerne and gladly teche."
